Personality: Upon first glance, Battler is more or less a 'comedy-relief' archetype that desires the simple things in life. This can indeed contrast to the older characters in the series whose goals seem to be the Ushiromiya family inheritance. Rather, Battler has no desire for money, or fame, and would rather live simply. In a conversation, he's seen cracking jokes, or playing with and teasing those much younger than him. He strives to have fun. Despite this, he realizes that his wishes are indeed unrealistic. In a way, he's still immature for his age.
There are times when his joking can go too far, where he offends, and sometimes does indeed upset others around him. He does make crude jokes as well sometimes, unfitting for certain situations in the course of the series. All in all, Battler does generally mean well. It is because of this flaw in his personality that some could say that he doesn't exactly think before he acts at times.
In a way, Battler is socially awkward. There are times when he meets girls, or sees other females for the first time in years, and will attempt to grope their breasts. However, Battler doesn't do this with ill-intentions. He'll begin to panic if someone doesn't stop him (asking himself 'why someone doesn't yell, or punch him?'). It's his own way of making the atmosphere lighter. However, Battler doesn't deny that he can be a pervert - even is referring to himself as a 'breast sommelier' at times.
Battler does indeed look up to some of the more intellectual characters around him. As stated earlier, although he does disagree with them in some of their ideals - he does look up to George Ushiromiya - calling him 'Aniki' throughout the series (a nickname he gave to him when they were younger), and he does look up to Kyrie as an older sister, instead of a Step Mother.
He can also be compassionate. For example, in canon, it is said that 'he will forgive an opponent if they act soft', which does tend to be true. Despite all that Beatrice had done to him, there was a point in time in Episode 3: Banquet of the Golden Witch when he did join forces with her (for a very brief period of time, mind you) - despite all of the horrible things she had done and said to him in their past game. Although he had been originally trying to erase her existence completely, he would go as far as to help her, and even follow her last wishes when she appears to sacrifice herself.
Battler is quite emotional. He is one of the first characters to break down - screaming and crying when the corpses are discovered in Legend of the Golden Witch. Although he tells himself not to cry over and over again, or that he will not let himself be weak anymore, there are times later on the in the series when he does let his emotions get the better of him. Battler cam sometimes think more with his emotions at first; rushing into situations without thinking things through at first.
Though despite this personality flaw, Battler can be intelligent and calm when the situation calls for it. Using logic that others may not have used when it involves solving the murders that happen throughout the series - Battler is indeed a rational thinker. However, some of his logic may seem twisted and make little sense. Using the strategy of 'turning the chessboard over', he tends to see situations from several different perspectives. As said earlier, he tries to view the murders from the culprits point of view. This strategy indeed proving useful in his battle against Witches.
As described in some points of the series by other characters, Battler is 'like a phoenix'. He is incredibly strong-willed and stubborn, standing back on his feet and growing stronger every time he appears to give up in his struggle against Witches. He learns from his mistakes, and uses that to his advantage in his fights later on. There are many scenes where he appears to give up (frequently using his catchphrase 'It's useless! It's all useless!"), and he does indeed surrender to Beatrice in one point in time. However, he does pull through later on - whether if it's through his own way of thinking through a situation, or other characters pulling him back to continue fighting.
By the end of Episode 5, he finally finds the truth of Beatrice's game, and realizes that she's been waiting for him to discover said truth. She becomes something of a love interest to him, and decides to dedicate the Sixth Game to her. He would do almost anything just to preserve her honor--.... even if it means bringing harm to himself. Battler, despite becoming a witch, remains to be one of the most human characters on the 'fantasy side' of the series. In Episode 6, he creates his gameboard to be one where none of his family actually does die, unlike the other Games that Lambda or Beatrice created as respective Gamemaster. At the end of Episode 6, he marries Beatrice.
Abilities: In Uminekoverse, magic depends on belief. The more humans believe in magic, the more powerful a witch can become.
Endless Magic: Battler is an Endless Sorcerer. He can repair broken as much as He pleases, over and over again. Of course, it is far more difficult to revive a human, but it isn’t impossible to do so.
Summoning: Battler can summon many different furniture--from the Seven Sisters of Purgatory to simple Goat-like butlers, to powerful demons from Hell.
Transportation: He can go from place to place--disappearing in his trademark sign. That is a golden butterfly.
Red text: Anything that is spoken in red is the truth. When he uses this magic, the area around her turns into a red, crimson color as he speaks. However, red truth is not absolute, and can be easily twisted. Though, red truth cannot be used if the statement is a lie, and can hurt the person using it if used wrongly. Again, red truth can be twisted easily. I.e; a key might have existed before, but disappeared. The one wielding that very magic can say ‘there is no key’ when there was one to begin with. Only witches are permitted to use this magic, and create red truths with it. The non-witches in the series only use what red they have been given to by a witch.
Blue text: This is a text that can be quite dangerous to a witch if used correctly. Instead of merely saying the truth as the red can, this text is used to theorize against other witches. Disbelief can be a witch’s greatest enemy. Therefore, using this can be enough to almost kill a witch--as shown in Episode 4. i.e; “He could have just walked into the room, he didn’t need magic.”
Gold text: This truth is 100% absolute. There is no way to fight against it, nor is there a way to use it unless it is indeed the truth. However, this can only be used by those who understand a gameboard completely.
Simple magic: To make candy fall from the sky--or make a single rose petal appear in a cup. To make tea appear out of no where. Battler’s magic is indeed unlimited, however it has many weaknesses to it, as well.
